The prepubertal testis measures some 2cm in length and increases to 4.1ΓÇô5.5cm in the normal adult. Testicular size can be assessed by use of a Prader's orchidometer, which comprises a set of ellipsoids that can be related to testicular size (Fig. 11.19).
When the seminiferous tubules are damaged before puberty, the testes are small and firm.
Postpubertal damage characteristically causes small, soft testes. Considerable testicular damage may occur before overall size is below the lower limits of normal.
